How to Pass HSK 4: The Intermediate Learner's Guide

HSK 4 is where most learners feel the difficulty jump. HSK 1-3 builds your foundation -- basic characters, simple sentences, everyday vocabulary. HSK 4 asks you to actually use that foundation. You'll read multi-paragraph passages, understand conversations about abstract topics, and write short compositions.

It's also the level many employers and universities consider "functional" for work and study purposes. Pass it, and you've demonstrated genuine Chinese literacy.

Understanding the exam format is essential for targeted preparation. HSK 4 has three sections, each testing different skills.

You need 180 out of 300 total to pass -- that's 60%. You don't need to ace every section. Many learners pass with a strong reading score compensating for a weaker writing score. But you do need to be competent across all three areas.

HSK 4 builds directly on HSK 3. If you're not solid on the HSK 3 material, HSK 4 prep will be frustrating and inefficient. Before starting, make sure you have:

HSK 4 adds 441 characters to the 655 from HSK 1-3, bringing the total to 1,096. These characters are more complex and abstract than the earlier levels. You'll encounter characters for emotions (激动 -- excited, 失望 -- disappointed), academic concepts (研究 -- research, 科学 -- science), and social situations (邀请 -- to invite, 表达 -- to express).

The good news: by this point, you know enough radicals and components that many new characters are partially familiar. The character 请 (to invite/please) shares its right component 青 with 清 (clear), 情 (emotion), and 晴 (sunny) -- all of which you may already know from HSK 2-3.

With 30-45 minutes of daily study, most learners can prepare for HSK 4 in 4-6 months after passing HSK 3. Here's a month-by-month breakdown.

Some learners do this in 4 months with 45-60 minutes daily. Others need the full 6 months at 30 minutes daily. Both are normal. The important thing is that you're consistently adding characters, practicing reading, and maintaining your SRS reviews throughout.

HSK 4 grammar is where many learners struggle, even if their vocabulary is strong. These are the patterns you need to internalize -- not just recognize, but produce naturally.

Grammar is best learned through example sentences, not rules. For each pattern, find 5-10 example sentences and read them until the structure feels natural.

HSK 4 listening includes longer dialogues and monologues. You'll hear each recording twice. Key strategies:

- Read the questions first. You have a few seconds before each recording. Use them to scan the answer choices so you know what to listen for. - Don't try to understand every word. Focus on the key information the question asks about. - Practice with native-speed audio daily. Start with HSK 4 practice materials, then gradually include podcasts or simple news broadcasts.

Reading is often the highest-scoring section for character-focused learners. Strategies:

- Read the passage first, then the questions. For longer passages, skim for structure before reading in detail. - Use context to handle unknown characters. You won't know every character, but you can often guess meaning from surrounding text. This is a skill to practice, not avoid. - Practice sentence reordering. These questions test grammar intuition. The more Chinese sentences you've read, the more naturally you'll sense correct word order.

Writing is the section most learners fear, but it's also the most predictable. You'll reorder words into sentences and write short compositions (80-100 characters) based on picture prompts or given words.

- Practice reordering daily. Take any Chinese sentence, scramble the words, and practice putting them back in order. - Build a template for compositions. Most prompts follow a pattern: describe a situation, state your opinion, give a reason. Practice writing 3-4 sentence responses using this structure. - Don't try to be creative. Use grammar structures you're confident with. A simple, correct sentence scores better than an ambitious, error-filled one.

The 441 new characters are manageable with consistent daily study. The grammar patterns are learnable with enough example sentences. And the exam itself is predictable enough that practice tests give you a real advantage.
