HSK 2 Character List: Complete Guide with Radical Analysis

125 new characters that build on your HSK 1 foundation -- with radicals, frequency data, and structural study strategies

HSK 2 introduces 125 new characters, bringing your cumulative total to 371 characters (246 from HSK 1 plus 125 new ones). This is where character learning starts to feel different -- you'll begin seeing familiar radicals and components in new combinations, and the structural patterns that seemed abstract at HSK 1 become genuinely useful.

The characters at this level cover more concrete vocabulary: body parts (眼, 足, 身), movement verbs (走, 跑, 跳), colors (红, 黑, 绿), and everyday objects (门, 楼, 酒). You'll also encounter more compound-ready characters -- characters that combine with HSK 1 characters to form common words.

Key Radical Patterns at HSK 2

HSK 2 introduces several radicals that become increasingly important at higher levels. The 辶 (walk/movement) radical appears in 6 characters including 过 (to pass), 进 (to enter), 远 (far), 近 (near), 运 (transport), and 送 (to send). This is a radical worth learning well -- it shows up in dozens of characters across all HSK levels.

The 足 (foot) radical also makes a strong appearance with 6 characters: 足 itself, plus 跟 (to follow), 跑 (to run), 跳 (to jump), 踢 (to kick), and 路 (road). Notice how all of these relate to feet or movement -- that's the radical system working as designed.

Other important radicals at this level include 纟 (silk/thread) in characters like 红 (red), 绿 (green), 绍 (to introduce), 累 (tired), and 颜 (color); and 忄 (heart) in emotional characters like 情 (feeling), 快 (fast/happy), 慢 (slow), and 懂 (to understand). What Comes After HSK 2

HSK 3 adds 284 more characters, bringing your cumulative total to 655. The jump is significant, but the radical knowledge you build at HSK 1-2 makes it manageable. Many HSK 3 characters use radicals you already know well from these first two levels.

For broader context on the exam structure, see our HSK 2026 changes guide. To understand how HSK levels map to real-world reading ability, check out how many Chinese characters do you need to know. And for strategies on preparing for the exam itself, see our guide on how to study for the HSK exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there only 125 characters in HSK 2 compared to 246 in HSK 1?
HSK 1 covers the absolute foundational characters that appear in nearly every sentence. HSK 2 adds characters for more specific vocabulary -- colors, sports, body parts, and everyday objects. The character count varies by level based on the vocabulary needs of each proficiency stage.
Are HSK 2 characters harder than HSK 1?
On average, yes -- HSK 2 characters have a higher average stroke count (8.5 vs 7.0) and include more complex structures. But they're also more visually interesting, with clearer radical patterns. Many learners find HSK 2 characters easier to remember because the radical system makes more sense by this point.
Can I skip HSK 1 and start with HSK 2?
Not recommended. HSK 1 characters include the most common characters in Chinese -- structural particles, pronouns, basic verbs -- that appear in virtually every sentence. Without them, HSK 2 characters won't be useful in context.
How long does it take to go from HSK 1 to HSK 2?
Typically 2-3 months of regular study. With 125 new characters to learn, that's roughly 1-2 new characters per day plus regular review of HSK 1 material. The pace is faster than HSK 1 because you've already developed study habits and radical recognition skills.
What percentage of Chinese text can I read with HSK 1-2 characters?
Roughly 60-65% of characters in everyday text. This doesn't mean you understand 65% of the meaning -- many words are formed by combining two characters -- but you'll recognize the majority of characters you encounter in simple texts.
